It contains abstracts of 634 studies carried out during the period 1960-1986 that describe the methodology, the region covered, and the principal results. The entries are classified into 12 subject areas: general demography, population policy, population size and growth, population projections, population characteristics, mortality and morbidity, fertility, family welfare (family planning), public health, migration and urbanization, methodology and demographic analysis, and the impact of population growth on socioeconomic development.

Chapter 5 provides key references to country and regional sources. Chapter 6 is primarily intended for graduate students aiming to publish their work. An appendix includes three examples of population research topics and the relevant literature, including urbanization, child survival, and sociopsychological variables.
