These are the proceedings of a
meeting held at the Assemblée Nationale in Paris, France,
September 22-23, 1997, on issues concerning population policies and
international assistance. The 26 contributions are organized into five
sections. The first section is general in nature and has papers on the
International Conference on Population and Development in Cairo, family
planning in francophone Africa and Asia, European population problems,
the demographic situation in Africa, the demographic transition in Viet
Nam, and population policies in the Maghreb countries. The second
section examines the relationship between population and development,
with papers on reproductive health, fertility declines, African
migrations, polygamy, demography and poverty in Haiti, population and
conflict in Rwanda, and Africa's future. The third section looks at the
demand in the developing countries for family and population policies.
The fourth section examines how the needs of developing countries can
be harmonized with the resources available from the developed
countries. A final section provides additional papers on the
demographic situation in Africa and in Madagascar, the situation in
Algeria, the need for legislation on reproductive health and family
planning in Africa, and the implications of the Cairo commitment to
support the reproductive health approach. The text of an appeal for
action agreed upon at the conference is
included.
