This special issue is the first volume of the proceedings of
an international seminar held in Siena, Italy, April 22-24, 1996. The
12 papers in this volume, which are in English or French, examine
various aspects of both the causes and consequences of demographic
trends. The conference was envisioned as the first step toward the
development of a basic demographic textbook including a synthesis of
demography as a discipline as well as analyses of individual
demographic phenomena.
