The results of Guatemala's National Socio-Demographic Survey, undertaken in 1986-1987, are presented. This volume is concerned with the demographic data included in the survey. The first part describes the methodology employed. The second part presents an analysis of the data, with sections on the demographic, social, and economic characteristics of the population; the components of population growth, including mortality, fertility, and internal and international migration; and the characteristics of housing and households. The third part presents a summary of the demographic data. A second volume contains data on employment. A third volume, published in eight separate fascicles, provides the survey results by region.

"The information presented is a combination of formerly published data gathered from past issues of the ILO Year Book, reviewed and adjusted where possible, in line with changes in classifications and international definitions, and of new data. The new data make up more than half of the publication and consist mostly of information derived from recent population censuses or earlier censuses which for various reasons were not published before in the Year Book....The Retrospective Year Book contains statistical information on the economically active population for 184 countries and territories....The focus of this Retrospective Year Book is on the broad, long-term changes over time in countries' total and economically active population and on the broad differences between countries. The data presented here are from those population censuses carried out after 1945 for which data were available in the ILO database by late 1989."
