This is the first of three volumes of papers presented at the twenty-first conference of the International Union for the Scientific Study of Population (IUSSP), held in New Delhi, India, in September 1989. The papers, which are in English with the exception of one in French, cover a broad range of population issues in developing countries. Papers in this volume are organized under chapter headings on patterns of fertility change in Asia, the demography of China, data collection systems in South Asia, population growth policies in Southeast Asia, social structure and fertility change, emerging issues in fertility control, fertility analysis, conditions of child survival, and biomedical and demographic aspects of health.
