rates for the decade 1971-81. Analysis of the 1981 census 5 per cent
sample data. LC 87-900279. 1986. v, 30 pp. New Delhi, India. In
Eng.
Results are presented of an analysis of a five percent sample
of data from the 1981 census of India undertaken in order to estimate
vital rates for the period 1971-1981. The methodology used to estimate
life expectancy at birth and the crude death rate is first described.
Separate chapters are then devoted to estimates of child mortality and
fertility. The vital rates are presented separately for the 14 major
states as well as for the country as a whole. The results indicate
that the decline in the birth rate that has occurred has been balanced
by a similar decline in the death rate.
