This is the first issue of a quarterly journal that will be devoted
to the political and social implications of demographic trends in
France, with particular attention to immigration. This first issue is
concerned with the problem of how foreigners can obtain French
nationality and contains a debate in which both a liberal and a strict
approach to this question are outlined. It also includes a history of
the nationality question, a review of changes in the regulations
governing the acquisition of French nationality, and the current law
and proposals to change it.
