These are the proceedings of a one-day
conference held in Pisa in May 1984, concerning aspects of population
trends in contemporary Italy. The six papers, by different authors,
focus on three main topics: regional disparities in rates of
population growth, the changing relationship between migration and
urbanization, and the use of analytical models to assist in the
development of migration policy.

These are the proceedings
of a conference on socio-demographic change in the United Kingdom and
its measurement, held at the University of Sussex, September 9-11,
1985. "The conference papers assembled in this volume not only discuss
theoretical and methodological problems, but also provide valuable
information about new dimensions of demographic and social change in
[the United Kingdom] in the recent past. Sources and methods of
analysis are critically evaluated, as are different kinds of
'explanation' of socio-demographic change. Particular attention is paid
to change between generations, and to structural change."

items will be cited in this or subsequent issues of Population

The world population conferences
of Bucharest in 1974 and Mexico in 1985 are described, with emphasis on
changes in national attitudes toward population issues during the
intervening 10-year period. The author detects a general change in
official attitudes from radical pessimism to moderate pessimism
concerning population questions. The main recommendations of the
Mexico City conference are summarized.
